Why buy from Cruachan Highland Cattle?

Located in Victoria, Australia, we founded Cruachan Highland Cattle in 1987 and we have been at the forefront of breeding these wonderful animals for 37 years.

All our current stock are derived from Fully Imported Bloodlines and these cattle are often referred to as "Fullblood". This means that there is no grading-up from any other breed of cattle within their pedigrees, so our genetics are totally 100%  Scottish Highland Cattle.
For an explanation of Highland Cattle grading-up in Australia see our article titled "Fullblood, Graded, or What".

Our bloodlines have been sold to a number of the top Highland Cattle breeders throughout Australia.

What should you buy??

A few thoughts and our recommendations!

Young Highland STEERS

Steers are definitely the most ideal for the smaller properties.

Many people are unaware that the males in this breed are much more quiet and steady going than cows or heifers.
Apart from being docile, Steers grow the most magnificent sweeping horns of the breed.
Unlike cows, heifers, and bulls, steers do not have any interest in breeding, and are therefore not prone to going through fences or wandering off looking for a mate.
Steers are easy care and are the best for people starting out, as well as gaining experience with cattle.
Young Highland HEIFERS

Heifers are great for starting out as a Highland breeder.

Suitable for properties that can sustain at least two cows, plus future calves.
Get to know them from a young age, and as they grow into adult cows.
However, it is paramount to have proper cattle handling facilities prior to aquiring breeding stock.  There will be vaccinations, tagging of calves, and there is always a possibility that assistance may be required during calving.
It also helps to run Highland Cattle through the facilities at least twice a year so that as their horns grow they learn to navigate them through the cattle crush.
Beautiful Cow and Calf

Highland Cows...

Well suited to those with experience in handling cattle and who have the necessary yarding facilities on their property.
With mature Cows, possibly with calves at foot, you can see the "finished" product, including any faults, minor or major. They can usually be considered to be proven breeders.
One tip if purchasing cows... it pays to ensure that they have been through handling facilities on their previous property, otherwise there may be issues in getting them through the facilities on the new property.
